Tunnel Upgrade Project Demonstrates the Importance of Enclosure Selection in Harsh Environments

As part of a major tunnel infrastructure upgrade on a key Perth transport route, new smart camera systems were installed to support improved safety, traffic monitoring, and incident detection.

For these systems to operate reliably, the project required an enclosure solution capable of performing in a harsh tunnel environment. Exposure to moisture and airborne particulates, and stringent ingress and corrosion requirements, necessitated the protection of electrical and communication components.

Electrical and communications contractors worked closely with Rittal during the project to determine a suitable solution. While an alternative enclosure had initially been specified, a detailed technical review led to the selection of Rittal’s Hygienic Design (HD) enclosures, based on their ability to meet the project’s performance and compliance requirements.

Originally developed for hygiene-critical environments such as food processing and pharmaceutical manufacturing, HD enclosures are designed to provide high levels of ingress protection and resistance to corrosion. These characteristics make them suitable for infrastructure applications where equipment is exposed to demanding environmental conditions, including tunnels, transport systems, and wastewater facilities.

The completed installation met all technical and environmental requirements, demonstrating the application of Hygienic Design enclosures in infrastructure settings beyond their traditional use.
