As data volumes increase, IT infrastructure is being deployed across a broader mix of environments, from large-scale data centres through to smaller IT rooms and distributed edge locations. While these environments differ in scale, the underlying requirements remain consistent: higher equipment density, stable operating conditions, and infrastructure that can be installed and maintained efficiently.
This places greater emphasis on the role of the rack.
Higher-density equipment introduces increased structural load, more complex cable routing, and greater reliance on consistent airflow. At the same time, installation conditions vary significantly, particularly in edge environments where access and deployment time are often constrained.
Rittal’s FR IT Rack is designed to support these requirements within a single enclosure platform.
Structural Capacity and Configuration
As equipment density increases, load capacity becomes a primary consideration. The FR IT Rack supports a static load capacity of up to 1500 kg, allowing dense server, storage, and UPS configurations to be installed within a single footprint.
Internally, adjustable mounting angles allow the rack to accommodate different equipment depths and configurations. This provides flexibility across a range of hardware platforms and installation requirements without the need for modification.
Airflow Through the Enclosure
Maintaining consistent airflow is essential to support equipment performance at higher densities.
The FR IT Rack uses a vented front door and a vertically split vented rear door, both designed with high-density hexagonal mesh and up to 75% vented surface area. This supports airflow through the enclosure and helps maintain stable operating conditions for installed equipment.
Installation and Access
Installation and servicing requirements vary across environments, particularly where space or access is limited.
The FR IT Rack includes a 130° door opening, providing improved access during installation and maintenance. Tool-free side panels can be removed and secured quickly, supporting more efficient servicing and reducing time required for intervention.
The rack can also be delivered flat-packed or fully assembled, allowing it to adapt to different site conditions and deployment requirements.
Cable Management in High-Density Environments
As rack density increases, cable management becomes more critical to both installation quality and ongoing maintenance.
The FR IT system includes integrated options for vertical and horizontal cable routing, along with accessories to support organised installation of power and data. This supports structured layouts and maintains accessibility within the rack environment.
A Consistent Platform Across Environments
The FR IT Rack is designed for use with standard rack-mounted hardware in accordance with EIA-310-E, supporting servers, networking equipment, and power systems.
It can be deployed across data centres of all sizes, small to medium IT rooms, high-density networking environments, and distributed edge installations. Using a consistent enclosure platform across these environments supports standardisation in design, installation, and maintenance.
